2018 Itinerary:
Basque Country Tour from Madrid San Sebastian, La Rioja Alavesa, Vitoria, Bilbao, Loyola Sanctuary, Getaria, Zarauz
Day 1 (Monday)               ARRIVE MADRID
Madrid airport arrival transfer to your hotel, your day is free (perhaps book an optional evening Tapas Tour or Prado “Skip the Line” Afternoon Tour). Accommodation.
Day 2 (Tuesday)              MADRID
After breakfast, enjoy a city tour of Madrid. Find the medieval origins of the city, like the Arabic fortress, at the Barrio de la Morería, characterised by the antiquity of its buildings, drive through the courtesan district of the Hapsburgs characterised by Phillip II and his Renaissance and Baroque style buildings, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa; the Madrid of the Bourbons and the complex town planning schemes of Charles III, the Royal Palace (visit inside), Cibeles and Neptuno Fountains and the Puerta de Alcalá. Admire the 19th century works such as Prado Museum. The contemporary Madrid with areas such as Gran Vía, Castellana, the district of Salamanca, Plaza Castilla and Parque del Oeste, as well as commercial and financial zones of Modern Madrid, the emblematic Las Ventas Bullring and the Santiago Bernabéu Football Stadium. The afternoon is free to continue exploring the wonders that Madrid has to offer. Accommodation.
Day 3 (Wednesday)          MADRID / ZARAGOZA / SAN SEBASTIAN
After breakfast depart from Julia Travel bus terminal (Plaza de Oriente) at 0830 towards Zaragoza with free time to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of The Pilar, patroness of Hispanity and stroll through the old streets of Zaragoza. In the afternoon we will continue to San Sebastian, one of the most famous tourist destinations. Panoramic city tour of this French style bourgeois city, seeing the extraordinary landscape dominated by the bay and the magnificent Conchas beach. Accommodation.
Day 4 (Thursday)             SAN SEBASTIAN / LA RIOJA ALAVESA / VITORIA
Breakfast and then depart towards Vitoria via Lasarte, Andoain, Villabona and Tolosa. Here in the historical centre are preserved public buildings of the 16th and 17th century. Next, arrive at Ordizia, short stop to visit the historical centre and nucleus of the town, declared Joint Monumental-Historic site. Afterwards, continue to Oñati, Guipúzcoa’s, a most notable village for its artistic grandeur and visit the Sanctuary of Guipúzcoa, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aránzazu, in charge of the Franciscan Order. Next continue to the Rioja Alavesa and arrive at Laguardia, a town famous its cellars! Enjoy a guided walking tour before, in the afternoon, departing for Vitoria. On arrival enjoy a panoramic tour of the main landmarks of the town. Accommodation.
Day 5 (Friday)                  VITORIA / BILBAO
After breakfast depart to Salinas de Añana, one of the most surprising corners of the Basque Country. Here, we will enjoy a guided tour to learn about the history, architecture, archelogy and biodiversity of the salt before moving onto to Orduña to start a guided visit through this historical village. Next we will travel through the Valley of Ayala to arrive in Balmaseda for a walking tour. Free time for lunch; after lunch we will continue through the mining area of Bizkaia to reach the coast; Santurtzi and Portugalete, from here we cross the Transporter Bridge Bizkaia (world heritage by UNESCO) to reach Getxo and then finish back in Bilbao. This afternoon join a sightseeing tour, including the ascent to the Artxanda Mountain, and a walking tour around the Old Quarter. Entrance to the Guggenheim Museum with its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions it included; you will be able to visit freely (guide is not included, the entrance fee only). Accommodation.
Breakfast and then drive through the typical green and mountainous Basque landscape to the province of Gipuzkoa, pass Eibar, Elgoibar, Azkoitia, and reach the Sanctuary of Loyola. Visit the shrine of harmonious proportions, built in 17th and 18th century. Continue via Azpeitia, to the coast by Zumaia and reach Getaria, the birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano with its arch Catrapona, Parish Church of San Salvador (15th century) - a Gothic gem, fishing port and village. Afterwards continue passing by Zarautz, a tourist reference since the 19th century, with its 2500 metres long beach, the longest of Gipuzkoa, and the old town and picturesque streets of cosmopolitan ambiance. Later, arrive into San Sebastian; enjoy a walking tour in the historic city and port, Dominican Convent (16th century), the Basilica of Santa Maria de Coro (18th century) and the Constitution Square. Return to Bilbao. Accommodation.
Day 7 (Sunday)                BILBAO / MADRID (Train)
After breakfast morning at leisure. In the afternoon transfer to the train station for your train to Madrid. Accommodation.
Day 8 (Monday)               DEPART MADRID
Your tour finishes after breakfast; transfer to Madrid airport (depending on your departure time, perhaps book an optional Prado “Skip the Line” Afternoon Tour.) END OF SERVICES
